Our Team
The Association of Africans in Scotland (AAS) is a Scottish
registered charitable association which aims to encourage and ensure the seamless integration of Africans resident in
Scotland.
We are a membership organisation that provides opportunities for people to connect, celebrate and engage critically with a wide range of topics and ideas about Africa today and Scotland. Through our events, publications and digital channels we share insight, instigate debate and facilitate mutual understanding between the UK and Africa.
We amplify African voices and interests in academia, business, politics, the arts and education.
Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the African population in Scotland. An increasing percentage of African professionals are now contributing to the development of numerous sectors of Scottish society.
This includes Education. Health, Financial Services, Hospitality etc.
The idea of AAS was initiated in 2013 by one of its trustees members who came to study in Edinburgh. The thought of having a socio-political forum for Africans in Scotland started to brew amongst a few friends who would eventually form the board of trustees. Engagement with
Africans resident in Scotland revealed some of the challenges facing our community which includes lack of support for new residents, integration, mental health, problems finding suitable jobs and progression while
in employment among other issues.
